What Affects the Cost of Estate Planning in Lockport and Will County

The cost of estate planning depends on what you need, not on a standard price. A single will is a small job. A trust, a blended family, property in other states or a business adds work.

Why there is no one number

Estate plans are built for the family, so they vary a lot. Two people can both say they want a will and need very different work. One owns an apartment and a car and has a spouse and adult children. The other owns two rental buildings, an LLC and a child with special needs. The work, the time and the care are different, and so is the cost.

This page lists the things that change the cost, so you can see where your own plan lands. It does not give prices.

The cost of a plan comes from time and judgment. Time goes to learning your facts, drafting the documents, answering questions and supervising the signing. Judgment goes to choosing what fits, such as when a trust helps and when a simple will is enough. Everything on this page changes one or both. Jeff explains how that adds up for your family so that the quote matches the work.

Will or trust

A will is the simpler document. A revocable living trust is a longer document, and it needs more steps after signing, such as retitling property into the trust name. People choose a trust for different reasons: to avoid court for the property in it, to plan for a child, or to handle management if they cannot. The will versus trust page and the Do I Need a Trust tool help you decide whether you need the larger plan at all.

How many documents you need

A full plan has more than one piece. Each additional document adds drafting and review time.

A married couple usually needs two sets, one for each person, and the documents are often written to work together.

Your family

A simple family is faster to plan for. Adding any of the following means more questions and more drafting.

What you own

The number of assets and where they sit matters more than their total value.

  • Real estate in more than one state. Property in another state may need its own steps.
  • A business or part of one.
  • A large estate that may be near the Illinois tax line. See Illinois estate tax.
  • Online accounts, see digital assets.

Work after signing

Signing is not always the end. If you create a trust, the house, accounts and other property have to be moved into it. Beneficiary forms need to match. Some counties charge a fee to record a deed. Jeff can tell you what comes after signing and what you can do yourself.

Plans also need a look every few years. A birth, a death, a divorce, a move or a sale can all change what you need. Ask about updates when you plan, so you know how that works.

Ways to keep the work focused

You can help keep the work on track. Decide who you want in charge before the meeting, and ask them. Write down which assets matter most to you. Bring the beneficiary forms, since they decide who gets many accounts no matter what a will says. Say plainly if you want a small plan now and a larger one later, so the first documents are built to grow.

Tell Jeff about anything that worries you, such as a relative who may fight, a child who struggles with money or a business partner. Those facts shape the plan more than the size of the estate does, and they are better raised early than after the drafting starts.

How to get a clear answer fast

Bring what is on the estate planning checklist. The more Jeff knows about your family and your property on the first call, the clearer his explanation of the cost will be. It also helps to say what worries you most. Cost questions are easier to answer once the goal is clear.

If your question is about cost after someone has died, read probate cost. Jeff explains the cost for your plan on the first call.
